How To Make Makeup Last Longer

My last few posts have basically been all about makeup application, actually basic makeup application. I did highlight that there is a lot to learn about makeup, and I will try to explain as much as possible as we go. Well, today I am going to talk about making makeup last longer. Making makeup last longer is basically about oil control. This is very important particularly for people with very oily skin. When you apply your makeup, you want it to stay in place, but however, that is not what always happens. Sometimes makeup will literally slide off the face or take another form that is different from the initial one. This may sound like a joke, but believe me it’s actually far from funny. So you might be asking, what is the best way of making it last longer on your face? Or how to make your makeup stay fresh without necessarily having to add more product? Well, there are several ways of making that happen, and I am going to be sharing them with you here.

The first thing to do is to identify your skin type. It’s important to know if your skin is dry, medium, combination or oily. This is very important because when you know your skin type then you will know the best products to use for oil control. Dry skin is not going to necessarily need the same products as oily skin, and the same goes for medium and combination skin types. I have dry skin and I have noticed that sometimes I do not need to use any oil controlling products, unless if it’s on a very hot day or I am spending a lot of hours in the sun. However, a person with oily skin might always need to use something to control the oil/shine. If you have combination skin you might want to control the areas on your face that are oily, usually it will have to be the t-zone, and that is the forehead and nose area. So here are some of the methods of oil control that will certainly work.

1. Using A Primer

Face primer is one of the best ways of controlling oil/shine therefore making makeup last longer. A face primer is applied after moisturizer. There are a lot of different face primers to choose from. The best ones will keep your makeup looking fresh and shine free for several hours. People with dry skin do not necessarily need a primer, unless if going for a matte look. Otherwise it can be skipped and just apply foundation after applying the moisturizer. However, for oily skin it’s certainly a necessity.

2. Milk of Magnesia

Wow this is a controversial one. Mainly because milk of magnesia is normally used as an anti-acid, having said that, it is really good for oil control. It blocks oil for hours upon hours. The trick is just to not apply too much because it will show up under the foundation or concealer, and that is not a good thing. I have noticed that for dry skin it tends to suck moisture out of the skin, so I would only recommend it for very oily skin. And even for very oily skin I wouldn’t recommend regular use, just once in a blue moon.

3. Colorstay Foundations

I love colorstay foundations. They are certainly the best. I love them because they literally do not rub off or slide off the face. Makeup will stay in place for up to 24hrs looking fresh. I have used the Revlon Colorstay liquid foundation and really loved how long it lasted on my face without getting oily. The best thing is they have formulas for dry and oily skin, so you can easily choose that one that works for you.

4. Water Based Foundations

Water based foundations are also a great way of making makeup last longer. There is no oil in them so the foundation will stay on for hours. Also there are less chances of it rubbing off compared to oil based foundations.

5. Using a Setting Spray

Using a setting spray is another way of controlling oil and making makeup last longer. All you need to do is just spray on top of your makeup and you are good to go. Everything will stay in place for hours.

6. Translucent Powder

Translucent Powder will control shine by blocking the pores. The best part is that a translucent powder will not alter the colour of your foundation, but will certainly make your makeup last longer.

7. Moisturizing

Finally, moisturizing is very important no matter how oily you are. When skin is oily the temptation is usually to skip moisturizing, word of advice, don’t. The skin will need to feel hydrated for a lot of reasons, if not then it will produce more oil to make up for the dryness. It is better to moisturize then use a primer or other means of controlling shine.

Oh wow, that’s it for now from me. I hope that this has been helpful. Bye for now!

Nyasha.
